Understanding PFAS: Protecting Your Baby from Toxic Chemicals

PFAS is not the type of chemical class that we can ignore around small infants,” said Linda Birnbaum, former director of the National Institute of Environment Health Science (NIEHS).

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are synthetic chemicals, often referred to as “forever chemicals,” have recently raised serious health concerns as they are being found in everyday products. Their persistence in the environment and bioaccumulation in living organisms have sparked concerns about health effects.

Erik D. Olson, NRDC’s Senior Strategic Director for Health explains how PFAS is dangerous for 3 reasons. “First, the structure of PFAS means they resist breakdown in the environment and in our bodies. Second, they move relatively quickly through the environment, making their contamination hard to contain. Third, for some PFAS, even extremely low levels of exposure can negatively impact our health.”

PFAS can:

  • Have a higher cancer risk as chronic exposure may alter immune functions
  • Weaken immune response, making the body more vulnerable to infections and autoimmune disorders.
  • Disrupt endocrine system, as the synthetic chemicals can mimic or block hormones like oestrogen, potentially leading to hormonal imbalances, fertility issues, or early puberty
  • Affect developmental issues causing low birth rate or developmental delays in children

Manufacturers don’t even have to disclose to consumers about these hormone disruptors and regulations aren’t strict fast enough. While other companies scramble to meet tightening EU REACH standards, MILK™ is already leading the pack and redefining what it means to have a safe and clean diaper.

What is OEKO-TEX Standard 100?

MILK diapers have received the highly coveted OEKO-Tex® Standard 100 certification. OEKO-TEX is an independent third party that tests for harmful substances such as PFAS and the certification ensures that our product meets stringent requirements regarding ingredients, process chemicals, colors, traces, and additives.

With increasing global regulations and growing consumer awareness, PFAS-free alternatives are leading the way.MILK  baby diapers are designed to be ultra-soft, high-performing and safe enough for your baby’s delicate skin to give parents the ultimate peace of mind. Experience the difference today.
